Intramural sports for Penn State Harrisburg kicked off a new season with ultimate frisbee. For those who may not know, ultimate frisbee is an alternative to soccer. Two teams play at a time as they pass the frisbee and catch it without taking more than three steps. To score, the teams pass the frisbee to their players with the goal of reaching the end zone. Every score gets the team one point, just like in soccer. The frisbee can not touch the ground. If a player drops a pass or the frisbee touches the ground, it becomes an automatic turnover. The team with the most points in the end wins the game.
This season, ultimate frisbee consisted of five teams. In the first match, the Dirty Ducks faced off against the Stiff Socks. The Stiff Socks defeated Dirty Ducks 8-1. The next match was Violent Guppies v. Free Agents. Violent Guppies secured the win 11-7.
In the second round of matches, Stiff Socks secured the win against Violent Guppies 5-3. The Dirty Ducks returned to play the Stiff Socks, losing 12-2. When Free Agents returned they initiated a comeback, beating out Whisky Disc 7-5.
It was then on to the semifinals. Free Agents shut out the Dirty Ducks 10-0. Whisky Disc won against the Violent Guppies 6-4.
It all came down to the championship round. Free Agents won over the Violent Guppies 4-3 and the Stiff Socks defeated Whisky Disc 6-5 to advance to the final game. Free Agents beat out the Stiff Socks 7-4 and were crowned the champions of the intramural ultimate frisbee season.
Free Agents team captain Amaz Malik was excited about the win.
“It feels awesome to win a championship. It’s been a hard time working,” Malik noted.
“We didn’t really get any practice in but we got a team out, and I recommend everyone bring a team out. It’s really an awesome experience to win,” Malik continued.
Intramural sports for the remainder of the fall season include soccer, flag football, bowling and dodgeball.
