Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have officially punched their tickets to the 2024 United East Basketball Championships. For the men, it’s the second time in three years they’ve accomplished such a feat, and for the women, this makes back-to-back appearances.
The men have been dominant all year with an 18-3 overall record and a perfect 8-0 conference mark. They’re on a seven-game win streak and scoring 77 points per game. Seniors Donyae Baylor-Carroll (G), Nate Curry (G), and Alex Leiba (C), lead the team in nearly every statistical category from points to rebounds to shooting percentage. With just four games remaining in the season, their impressive play has already locked them into a top-two seed.
Furthermore, Baylor-Carroll and Curry have already had historical seasons, as the former now holds the program points record, and the latter just secured the program rebounds record.
“When your best players are also your best people,” said Head Coach Don Friday,” and they work really hard, good things happen.”
The Lady Lions haven’t been quite as dominant all year, but the team has won six of eight in the month of January, en route to a 10-11 overall record and a commanding 7-1 conference record. The girls have rebounded well, and they are coming off three straight wins by at least 25 points. Senior guards Jayla Galbreath and Giahny Corea lead the team in points, and Galbreath has been effective from beyond the arc with a 34.3% mark. Junior forward Ali Lister leads the team in rebounds and field goal percentage.
“This team is so special,” said Head Coach Patrick Ross. “It’s awesome just to watch how they support each other, believe each other, and love being around each other.” Both teams conclude on the road at Lancaster Bible College on February 13 before the playoffs start.
